Meet Our Team
Dr de Smedt founded De Smedt Optometrists in 1983 in Pretoria. He can be considered a pioneer in Optometry in South Africa since he was one of the first optometrists to obtain a postgraduate qualification in treating binocular vision abnormalities and diagnosing and treating ocular disease. Now with two thriving practices in Waverley and Pretoria, the family-run De Smedt Optometrists continues to offer quality eye care services to the community.
Dr Chris de Smedt
Dr. de Smedt founded De Smedt Optometrists in 1983 in Pretoria. He can be considered a pioneer in Optometry in South Africa since he was one of the first optometrists to obtain a postgraduate qualification in treating binocular vision abnormalities and diagnosing and treating ocular disease. In 1999 he obtained his Doctor of Optometry degree in Boston, USA.
He has a passion for pathology and is regarded as a specialist in complex contact lens fittings. Patients usually admire that the first frame he takes off the shelf is “the one”.
He loves spending time outdoors and taking beautiful photographs.
Lynette de Smedt
Lynette joined the family practice in 2006 and has since completed several postgraduate qualifications in contact lens care and Diabetes eye care. Recently she became one of the first optometrists in South Africa to complete all the requirements for a postgraduate certificate in ocular therapeutics (to treat eye diseases by prescribing medication).
Lynette loves connecting with her patients whilst finding tailor-made solutions for each problem, eye-related or not. She is incredibly passionate about taking care of the eyes of young children.
She enjoys making music and loves running and travelling in her spare time.
Christelle de Smedt
Christelle first graduated as a quantity surveyor but later decided to follow in the family’s footsteps and qualified as an optometrist in 2014, where after she also joined the family practice. She has also completed several postgraduate courses such as Diabetes eye care and specialised contact lens fitting.
Christelle’s socialite personality helps the practice network closely with other healthcare professionals, such as ophthalmologists, to provide the best care for the patient. She also enjoys the challenge of fitting specialised contact lenses.
Christelle loves spending time with her young children, shopping and running.
