Fundus photography involves a retinal camera designed to photograph the back and interior surface of the eye.

We make use of fundus photography routinely to diagnose or treat the following eye diseases:

  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic retinopathy, such as Macular Edema and Microaneurysms
  • Hypertensive retinopathy, which is an eye complication in people with high blood pressure
  • Optic atrophy, which is eye nerve damage
  • Papilledema, which is the swelling of the eye nerve
  • Eye cancer
  • Retinoblastoma, which is a tumour inside the eye
  • Congenital glaucoma
  • Congenital rubella
  • Congenital anomalies
Fundus Photography

There are several benefits to fundus photography, some of which include:

  • It is easier to see the retina’s details with fundus photography than directly looking at the eye.
  • It provides a bird’s eye view of the layers on the retina so that we can make an informed accurate diagnosis.
  • It allows for early and accurate detection of eye diseases, especially in diabetes or high blood pressure patients.

Dilated fundus examinations

A dilated fundus exam is when drops are used to enlarge the size of the pupil so that we can get a better view of the retina and the back of the eye.

This type of examination is typically performed on patients with small pupils, ocular diseases such as diabetes, and patients with risk factors or symptoms of retinal detachment.

Symptoms of retinal detachment include:

  • Sudden flashes of light
  • Floater, or tiny black specs in your vision
  • Sudden loss of side or central vision

After the examination, patients may experience light sensitivity and reduced ability to focus on near objects. Therefore, it is recommended that patients bring a pair of sunglasses to wear while driving home or have a friend or family member drive them home afterwards.
